Sooner or later, every heavy equipment owner faces the dilemma: what spare parts to choose when it’s time for repair or maintenance? There are three main categories on the market, and understanding the differences between them can save you a lot of money and headaches.
1. Genuine Parts
These are the parts that come in a box with the logo of your machine manufacturer (e.g. JCB, CAT, Komatsu).
Advantages: guaranteed quality and full compatibility. They are designed exactly for your model.
Cons: Highest price on the market. Often you pay extra for the manufacturer’s branding and marketing.
2. OEM parts (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
This is the “golden mean” in the industry. OEM parts are made by the same companies that make the parts for the machine manufacturers themselves (e.g. Bosch, Perkins or Berco) but sold under their own brand.
Advantages: the quality is absolutely identical to the original as they are produced on the same assembly lines. However, the price is significantly lower (often by 20-40%).
Why choose them: You get maximum reliability without unnecessary brand markup.
3. Alternative parts (Aftermarket)
These parts are manufactured by third party companies that have no direct connection to the original manufacturer.
Advantages: lowest price. They are an excellent choice for older machines where the investment in expensive parts is not economically justified.
Risks: quality varies considerably. Here it is critical to trust a supplier that has verified the reliability of its partners.
How to decide?
The choice depends on several factors:
Machine Age: For new machine under warranty, use Genuine or OEM parts. For older machines, alternative parts are a reasonable choice.
Part Criticality: For engine or hydraulic parts, we recommend OEM. For filters, teeth or buckets, alternate options often do a great job.
Budget: if you’re looking for the best value for money, OEM parts are the clear winner.
